AT&T® recently expanded their Fixed Wireless Internet service to rural areas of Lafayette County and Yalobusha County. The high-speed internet service from the Telco comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on the subscribers’ homes or on businesses residing in and around the neighborhood. AT&T® Fixed Wireless Internet promises to deliver a residential internet connection with download speeds of 10 Mbps at the least.

“Customers can stream TV shows or movies, do online classes, or just browse the web,” said Mayo Flynt, the president of AT&T® Mississippi. Flynt and other representatives of the Telco unveiled the Fixed Wireless Internet program recently at the AT&T® cellular tower off Highway 9 in Gault area. Also present in the occasion were Mississippi Senator Gray Tollison and the Lafayette County Supervisor Kevin Frye.

“In our new comprehensive plan that we will be voting on next week, one of our goals is to help better internet access to our more rural residents and this program helps to accomplish that,” Frye said.

The Fixed Wireless Internet service has been placed on 5 cellular towers in the county including Abbeville, Water Ford, Paris, and 3 more towers residing in Yalobusha. With the rollout in Lafayette, AT&T® has expanded Fixed Wireless Internet as a part of their commitment to the FCC Connect America Fund Commitment. The Telco has promised to deliver wireless internet service to rural and underserved homes across the US.

A part of the nationwide commitment includes reaching 18 states and 400,000 places by 2017, and more than 1.1 million locations by 2020. In Mississippi alone, the Telco plans to cover more than 133,000 rural homes and businesses using the advanced technology by 2020.

“We have committed to reaching at least 40 percent of those locations by the end of this year,” Flynt said. “We’re really excited about this program.”

The announcement of the rollout of Fixed Wireless Internet service from AT&T® to counties in Mississippi came in July this year and Lafayette has now come under the Telco’s service area. The signals of the internet service without satellite travels through radio waves billed to be faster than standard broadband. With the rollout, the scarcity of best internet service in the underserved areas of Lafayette County has been resolved by AT&T®.
