The U.S. Army recently offered a contract to the telecom giant AT&T®. The officials from the telecom company announced that the main aim of this newly signed contract is to modernize and unify the communication capabilities of the U.S. Army.

Reports from several reliable sources indicate that the Army has offered a 5-year contract to AT&T® in order to provide instant chat/messaging, integrated video, voice, and screen-sharing capabilities to approximately 1 million authorized users in the U.S. Army on both unclassified and classified networks. In a recent release, the officials from the telecom company added that these new services will “make it easier for Army personnel to connect, collaborate, and share information in support of daily operations globally.”

The release also says, “Army mechanics overseas can share screens with experts at a home station to speed repairs. Commanders and their staffs can use live video links to collaborate across different locations or direct troop operations abroad. Army personnel in the U.S. and abroad will have access to these services on demand from their desktops, laptops, and approved mobile devices.”

On the other hand, the Army officials talked about the benefits that they can enjoy by avoiding a huge capital investment through the commercial off-the-shelf contract. The statement made by the Army stated, “There are many benefits to COTS including saving money on initial investment, meeting IT requirements while avoiding costs, lowering maintenance investments, cost-effective new upgrades, and features and using technology that has already been tested.”

The president of the global public sector team of AT&T®, Kay Kapoor said, “We’re honored to deliver capabilities that complement our vision of a ‘Network of the Future’ for the Army. These services will help the heroes that defend our nation to connect, share, and keep us safe.”

The contract between the two parties has aligned with the wide push of the Defense Department towards cloud-first operations. As per the statements from AT&T®, this new service will enable Army mechanics overseas to share screens with experts to speed up the repair process.

In addition to that, the fastest internet provider, AT&T® has also confirmed that these services will be entirely cloud-based, which means that the U.S. Army will not have to spend money and buy new equipment in order to take advantage of AT&T’s new system.
