Video Streaming Rights

Charter Communications®, who is the fastest internet provider in several parts of the country, recently announced that they have finally signed a long-term distribution deal with CBS Corporation. Reports say that Charter® has gained retransmission rights for the stations that are owned by CBS through this new deal. In addition to that, the telecom giant has also expanded the authenticated streaming rights to the programming of both Showtime and CBS.

This recently signed deal with CBS Corporation gives Charter® retransmission consent rights for CBS O&Os in most of the major markets of the United States such as Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York. The officials from Charter® also confirmed that they have acquired the retransmission consent rights for CBS-owned The CW affiliates in Tampa and Atlanta market through the deal.

It is significant to note that Charter Communications® did not have authenticated streaming rights to CBS Sports Network or CBS programs until a few months ago. However, Charter® now carries the carriage pacts for the Smithsonian Channel™, CBS Sports Network, and SHOWTIME® through their multi-year pact with CBS Corporation. The fastest internet provider, Charter® currently has 22.9 million broadband and 16.4 million video subscribers.

The chief operating officer of CBS Corp, Joseph Ianniello, said, “We are very pleased to extend and expand our partnership with Charter®, which clearly recognizes the value CBS’ industry-leading content brings to their viewers throughout the country. This latest deal once again helps us achieve our company’s economic and strategic goals, while delivering must-have content to viewers live and on demand whenever and wherever they want.”

The good news is that CBS Corporation’s deal with Charter Communications® happened without any sorts of fee increases or public saber rattling over terms. These kinds of issues have become quite prevalent in the high-level distribution contracts of media giants. This means that both the companies have done extremely well to strike such a deal. Reports also claim that both the companies are planning to continue their partnership for a very long time.

The Executive Vice President of Charter’s programming acquisition, Tom Montemagno, said, “We are pleased to have reached this agreement with CBS that reflects the importance and breadth of Charter’s distribution and provides us expanded rights to provide our customers increased access to CBS’ content both inside and, now for the first time, outside the home as well.”
