Xfinity® Home from Comcast® Joins IoT Trade Organizations

Internet Providers
Cohesive Platform For Services

The smarthome and security unit from Comcast®, Xfinity® Home is now a member of the Internet of Things Consortium (IoTC). With this move, Xfinity® Home is diving deep into the IoT sector. The IoTC is not a technical standards body, but is a trade group/association that offers a forum focused on business for small and large businesses in the industry.

Some of the other members of IoTC include ADT, Verizon®, Fox, Greenwave Systems, The Weather Company, Cox Communications®, MasterCard, T-Mobile®, Nielsen, Turner, and LG Electronics. August, who is the maker of the smart locks that are integrated into the Xfinity® Home platform of Comcast®, and Stringify, which is an IoT automation startup acquired by Comcast®, are also part of the consortium. Many of the members are television and internet providers of the country.

Two executives from Comcast® are also joining as the advisors of IoTC. Sridhar Solur, who is the Senior Vice President of Product and Development at Xfinity® Home, and Daniel Herscovici, who is the General Manager and Senior Vice President of Xfinity® Home, are the two executives.

Solur said that a trade group like the IoTC is necessary, partly because it will be able to take the role of “self-regulation” while putting the startups and large companies on a platform that is dedicated to helping them develop their business. The starting of the trade groups like IoTC “is especially important for new industries,” he said.

“We’re still in the first few innings of what this industry will become, how large it will be, and how we will affect consumer experiences,” Herscovici said. He further added that it is very important for a telecom provider like Comcast®, focused on offering a cohesive platform with the Xfinity® Home, which can be combined with many third party smart home products like doorbells, locks, and garage door openers.

“It’s important for us to work with these point solution providers to figure out how to go to market in the most compelling way,” Herscovici said. Xfinity® Home has about a million users and is currently the lead of Comcast Corporation® at the IoTC. The company is also part of many other IoT activities. For instance, their MachineQ unit is aimed at enterprise Internet of Things service. Apart from the consumer side, IoTC is also working in areas like smart cities, security, and B2B solutions. “As we see how these working groups get formed, we will pull in the appropriate leaders from within Comcast to participate as needed,” Herscovici said.
