Another Telecom Giant to Launch Streaming Video Services

Charter Communications®, one of the fastest internet provider in the country, has announced that it is planning to launch a high tech streaming video service within 2 – 3 months. The company is apparently attempting to reclaim its pay TV subscribers and reinforce its strength in the industry. The service is called “TV Essentials” and it will be available to Charter® broadband customers at a monthly rate of $14.99.

Reports say that the program will include 60 live TV channels and On Demand content from American networks such as AMC, Viacom, Hallmark, Networks, and Discovery. The service will not feature sports as of now, but focuse on news programming and entertainment.

TV Essentials has been released after another of the major TV providers, Comcast®, announced that it would be developing a consumer streaming platform soon. AT&T®, meanwhile, already has a streaming service called DIRECTV NOW® as well as a lower price service called AT&T® Watch. It is also planning to launch a direct-to-consumer offering by the year end.

“Spectrum® TV Essentials is an OTT offering designed to provide Spectrum Internet-only customers a new low-price, high-value video option,” Charter® Chairman and CEO, Tom Rutledge, commented in a press release. “As we began to assemble the rights for this new video service, we received great enthusiasm and encouragement from these key programming partners, who share our view and embrace creating an innovative video offering we believe will resonate with our internet customers.”

He also remarked, “Notably, Viacom® shared its strong belief and research that suggests there is a large untapped opportunity for a low-priced, entertainment-only bundle unencumbered by the high cost of broadcast retransmission consent fees and expensive sports programming.”

There are many other existing streaming services in the US at present such as Hulu, Sling TV®, Philo TV, YouTube TV, and Sony PlayStation Vue. The TV Essentials service by Charter® will make the competition even more intense.
