CenturyLink® Fiber Cut Affecting Internet and Phone Line from Carbondale to Aspen

Fastest Internet Provider
Internet Services Disrupted

A fiber optic link from one of the best internet service provider in Jackson County, CenturyLink® was cut near Carbondale, due to which mobile phone and internet service from the city of Carbondale to Aspen was affected for many hours. However, Pitkin County authorities said that the services in Carbondale were restored fast.

A Pitkin County alert said that some landlines and mobile services were down at the Aspen Valley hospital. The Sheriff of Pitkin County advised the public to go to the local fire station and report emergences, if they were unable to reach 911 due to the outage. The authorities of Garfield County, however, did not issue any guidance for the residents.

The 911 service authorities said that the service was operational as long as the residents are able to find a working telephone to report problems and emergencies. However, no serious emergencies and incidents were reported during the internet and cell phone service outages.

CenturyLink® said in an email message, “Due to a third-party fiber cut, customers in Aspen, Carbondale, and Snowmass are experiencing disruptions to their Internet, phone and 911 services. In the event of an emergency, customers should try to reach the local police or fire station using their landline or cellphone and, if unsuccessful, should drive to the nearest fire station or hospital.”

KDNK radio said on their Facebook page that the source of the service outage was a fiber line Of CenturyLink® cut on County Road 109, which is about two miles north of Carbondale. KDNK said, “Radios had been distributed to community facilities, schools, banks, health care centers and City Market to enable emergency calls if necessary. It appears that people who have Comcast home phones have phone service and internet.”

In a similar incident that happened in May 2015, almost half of the Roaring Folk Valley lost 911 services and the outage lasted for more than sixteen hours, when some contractor accidentally cut a fiber optic line of CenturyLink®. At that time, the backup circuit was also routed through the same fiber bundle, and due to this, it took much time for CenturyLink® to restore the network.

CenturyLink® officials said in July that they had installed backup 911 circuits for Basalt and Carbondale and that these lines helped them to reroute the calls due to which the 911 disruption was minimal.
