What Andre Fuetsch Says about the 5G Technology and Network

The Dallas-based telecommunications company AT&T® will begin to roll out its 5G mobile service in a dozen cities by the end of this year. However, for AT&T® Labs’ President cum Chief Technology Officer, Andre Fuetsch, the unique aspect of the 5G technology is not blazing fast speeds that most telecom giants use in communication. He said, “What’s really going to differentiate 5G isn’t so much about… data buckets and speed but experience and engagement.”

The Dallas-based Telco giant predicts almost all content on the carrier’s network will in future be video related. The fastest internet provider perceives 5G as a chance to provide its subscribers with fully new experiences, controlling every aspect of the content supply chain from its creation to distribution. Besides, the ever-growing dominance of video content consumption over the AT&T® network is one of the reasons why it has acquired Time Warner®, now known as WarnerMedia.

“The network that we are designing today, and for the future, is very video centric,” Fuetsch said. “This fits into the larger story of AT&T® and why we got into the content business with the Time Warner® acquisition. Not only do we want to be part of the distribution and aggregation, we want to be part of the creation.”

The AT&T® leaders are extremely confident about the prospects of video consumption. At an event held earlier this year, the CEO of WarnerMedia John Stankey had predicted that the number of hours a person consumes on an average in a single day might increase to an hour and a half in the future.

Recently, Stankey said that the majority of traffic AT&T® carries over its network is actually video and that the carrier projects that over the subsequent five years 80 percent of content across the company network will be video-related.

The best internet provider also sees its network as one that offers a unique experience to its subscribers. While traditionally, the network technology is proprietary and closed off, the Telco has promoted an open source based network architecture and such kinds of approaches.

“By opening it up, it now allows us to bring in more disruptive technologies to come in and compete for that now open network,” Fuetsch added. “That drives better economics, it drives faster innovation, and in the end better benefit to the consumer.”
